Baby clothes can be a bit confusing to first time mothers - what to buy? How many? Will it even fit?
From day one, newborns will need four to six sleep suits, two cardigans, two hats and four pairs of socks as a basic minimum. You might well find you need more than that - babies are messy, and will need several changes of clothes in one day. Of course how much you buy will depend on how often you are prepared to do the washing!
Sleep suits are a practical choice for newborns as they spend a lot of the day sleeping, and when they get messy there is only one item to change. They also make nappy changes simple and easy. When it comes to choosing sleep suits for your baby, there are several things you might want to bear in mind.
Make practicality your guide. Check if a sleep suit is easy to put on and remove - most sleep suits have poppers all the way down the front and on the inside leg seams. This makes putting on and removing it very easy, and makes nappy changing simple. Busy Peas offer some very cute sleep suits with tomato, carrot and strawberry prints. Ella and Otto have a lovely set of sleep suits in organic cotton, that come in neutral colours and with some very funky matching hats. All have poppers all the way down the front for easy changes.
Some sleep suits come with built in feet, and others don’t - if you’ve got some without feet, don’t forget to buy enough socks so that you have one pair for each footless suit. Funky Feet Fashions have some footless sleep suits in block primary colours with a little applique design on the chest. Little Green Radicals have some cute footless sleep suits for the ecologically aware parent with a sense of fun! Their sleep suits are fair trade as well as organic cotton.
Try to stick with decorations that cannot fall off or be pulled - anything that can come loose is a choking hazard. But that doesn’t mean you have to stick to plain sleep suits! There are plenty that have great prints or applique designs that are perfectly safe to use. Olive and Moss have a great range of sleep suits with cute animal prints on the front - some even come with matching hats. Red Urchin also have some great unusual prints - theirs feature whales, robots and penguins, and also come with hats. Toby Tiger have a great range of applique suits, and all are made with organic cotton.
