Baby Jewellery Buyer's Guide

D for Diamond - Girls Silver Ballet Shoes & Bow Pendant
Parents across the world have been adorning their children with beautiful baby jewellery for centuries. It is something widely accepted in many cultures and often seen as a symbol of wealth and social status. Today, most mothers or fathers buy their kids jewels to accessorize their child’s wardrobe. This article is about the safety issues that parents need to consider if they want their child to wear jewellery.

Design

Long necklaces can become a choking hazard as well as loosely attached pearls on bracelets. A baby may try to chew off bangles on a bracelet and end up hurting or chocking themselves. Long necklaces can wrap around a small infant’s neck and rings can cut off circulation if they are too tight.

When you shop for baby jewels, safety should be your priority. Make sure that small components are not loose and firmly fixed into the piece. A string of pearls can be dangerous if the necklace is too long or if the chain is not durable. If the string breaks, pearls can come loose and end up in your child’s mouth, throat or nose and present a choking hazard.

Materials

It’s important to know what pieces are in the jewelleries, where they come from and if they are free of toxins and lead. For this reason, you should stick to brands and suppliers that are knowledgeable about the origins of the materials they use to create their product (see the examples below).

If you still don’t know what kind of pieces to get for your infant, mull over some options such as earrings, lockets, and birthstone necklaces. Don’t worry about real gems going to waste when your child outgrows them because the stones can be removed from the old settings and converted into adult jewels at a later date. Precious metals can also be melted down and reconstructed.

D for Diamond

One of the best known baby jewellery brands is D for Diamond. They manufacture real diamond pieces suitable for children. A few things one should bear in mind are that D for Diamond items of jewellery are not suitable for use as toys. Items of jewellery should only be worn for periods not exceeding 24 hours and never worn overnight (as quoted by the manufacturer).

Also, earrings, bracelets, pendants, necklaces and accessories with decorations are not suitable for children under the age of 3 due to small parts. Neither are they suitable for the initial piercing or healing period. However, they do make wonderful keepsakes which is how they are sold responsibly.

Bebe Amber

Bebe Amber is also an excellent choice that is mainly known for their excellent amber teething pieces.
The good thing about Bebe Amber necklaces is that each necklace is double knotting before and after each bead. The necklace is threaded on cotton cord and is fastened with a screw amber plastic clasp for safety.

"All Bebe Amber jewellery has been made using the highest quality materials; however children should always be supervised whilst wearing any jewellery. Extra special care must be taken with children under the age of 3 as all jewellery has small components which can cause a choking hazard. We recommend that all jewellery be removed prior to sleeping, and other occasions where the child may be left alone". Bebe Amber 2012

To sum up Baby jewellery items are perfect gifts to celebrate the arrival of a new member of the family that can be given during baby showers or Christenings.  However, parents must be mindful of the pitfalls when an infant wears baby jewellery and should always supervise their use. Also, baby jewellery should only be purchased from reputable retailers (like us!) so that the buyer knows the source, materials used, and that the product is safe.
