5 Things to Consider When Buying Baby Clothes

Buying clothes for a baby is an exciting part of being pregnant and having a baby. Not only are clothes essential items to buy your baby, they are also an opportunity for you to make your baby look fantastic and show them off to your friends and family. Because of this, there has been an increase in the number of funky and unusual products for the discerning parent to choose from. However, there are a number of things to consider when choosing baby clothes. Here is an overview of five of these -

While it can be tempting to buy glamorous clothes for your baby, it is important to consider their comfort. At different stages in your baby’s development, they have different needs at different times of the day. Newborns sleep a lot and need to be comfortable to do so. As your baby gets a little older, they will become more mobile and need the freedom to move. Busy Peas offer a great range of clothing that takes into account these considerations including funky bodysuits and comfortable day wear. Similarly, Ella & Otto produce some fantastic pyjamas that are comfortable, practical and stylish, while Logoshirts are great T-shirts for comfortable day-to-day wear.

It seems obvious, but one of the most important things to consider is the size of your baby. Baby clothes are generally sold in age categories based on the size of an average baby at that time. Your baby may be slightly larger or smaller. You should buy clothes in relation to your baby’s size rather than their age. Olive and Moss offer clothing in various sizes for babies and toddlers alike.

When buying clothes in advance, you need to consider the season. For example, if you buy clothes in the six to nine months range in January when your baby is currently two months old, it is important to remember that by the time they will fit the clothes it will be summer. The clothes that are currently available when you are shopping may be better suited to winter months. Therefore, you need either to look out for summer clothing or wait until nearer the time to make your purchases.

Babies make a mess! Leaky nappies, baby sick and dribbled dinners mean that babies often get through more than one outfit in one day. A typical busy mum will not have time to hand wash clothes or take them down to the dry cleaners. Buying clothes that are easy to care for and reduce the time spent on laundry makes sense. Machine washable and easy iron clothes are the best things to buy. Little Green Radicals is a good choice in this respect. Not only are their clothes organic and fair-trade, they are all machine washable too.

Shoes and accessories can be a funky fashion statement and an essential need for your child. A cute hat can complete an outfit but it can also protect your baby’s head against extremes of weather. A pair of shoes on a young baby is purely for fashion purposes, but as they get mobile, they offer support to the feet and ankles. Inch Blue offers some very unique designs of shoes and accessories that will cover your baby’s practical needs and make a fashion statement at the same time. Funky Feet is another option and they will personalise your accessories with your baby’s name or a message.
